Navy SEALs – What’s Not To Love? SUNDAYS WITH SHARON

Print/Audio books Available 9/25

Navy SEALs. As readers, we can't live without them. Like pirates of the High Seas and heroes of the Wild West, Navy SEAL heroes are big, big business in romance today. Mystery and suspense writers are having Navy SEAL and former SEAL characters show up in books. Paranormal writers have been adding SEALs to their menu of colorful characters. They are indeed the stuff of legends.

I'm not a purist, and I certainly take great liberties with non-fiction stories I've read, people I've interviewed and conversations I've overheard. I would hope that no one takes any fiction writer's words as gospel because the knowledge of the community is all over the lot when it comes to military romance. Some complain about the lack of “getting it right.” I say a story is a story. We get ideas when we go to movies, but does anyone really believe the plots we view on the big screen are real? Even plausible?

After all, life is a story. It's all made up, anyway. We're all here acting out our little drama for this brief time on this planet. If we were all seeking pure truth, we'd still be arguing about how many angels could fit on the head of a pin and still we wouldn't have the answer.

Releasing 10-14-15 including Audio

Good stories are just that, good stories. A kernel of truth, some mixture of angst, lust, love, desire to become better, more whole, loved more, respected, rooting out bad guys and seeking the elusive Happily Ever After – all these things make up for a good story. When we suspend disbelief, when we believe in things greater than ourselves, we say a book or a story inspires us. As writers, we all want to write that book that makes someone stay up all night long finishing. Grabs hold of you and never lets go.

When I first wrote my Navy SEALs back in 2011, there weren't a lot of other writers doing it. Now it seems like everyone is, and I say all the better. My first book faire was miserable. I sat and asked if people liked reading military romance and readers looked at me like I was nuts. Like the words military and romance didn't belong together. I even had a lady ask me, “What's so romantic about war?”

Heck, today we have zombie, ghost and caribou shapeshifter romance. I can remember when the critics used to argue with how much action and how much sex a military romantic suspense novel should have. Say what? That's like the judge who marked me down for having a female guardian angel, “because everyone knows guardian angels are all male.” Apparently her antennae was not as bent as mine is and she got the straight scoop.

Well, I'm completing my 11th Navy SEAL book as you read this. And someone in advertising said no series should go beyond five or six. Meanwhile, I'm disobeying some law of fictioncraft (happily, I might add) and don't see an end to this series on the horizon.

I've attached some new covers of things you'll see coming soon, most of them will be completed before the end of the year and some of them on preorder or better.

I can honestly say to you dear friends, that I am not chasing the trend. I prefer to think I helped start it. The sound you're hearing is a big old pat on my back. But now I have to get back to my computer. After all, we are only as good as our latest book.

SUNDAYS WITH SHARON –The World Keeps Spinning Around

SUNDAYS WITH SHARON

The World Keeps Spinning Around

I’ve told the story how, when I was about 3 or 4, my mother and father moved into a big house in Oakland (the McArthur freeway took the house when it was built), that was ½ acre, but seemed like a whole city block to me. The two-story house had two bedrooms downstairs, where my mom and dad and little brother slept. Upstairs were three other bedrooms and two side attic doors, where I used to worry demons lived. Later we would take on boarders to fill the two gabled bedrooms that looked over the busy street, but my bedroom was at the back and overlooked my mother’s beautiful garden. The view from my writing desk will some day resemble this, as the hill was filled with hydrangeas, roses and lush flowering plants and filled the entire glass pane of the windows there.

I had a bunk bed, and liked to take turns sleeping on the top bunk and then the bottom. At the bottom I would make a fort with other blankets, or sheer nightgowns I’d steal from my mother’s room. I pretended I was in a harem many long afternoons. The view of the green foliage was huge from the lower bunk.

The top bunk gave me sRCA 45EY26-1ort of a sense of security, as I could look down on everything and feel I guess a little safer from pirates or gremlins or other such things as might frequent the attic spaces. One of the things I’d look down on would be the little table in the middle of the room that held my record player.

I think I was 3 when I was given this RCA record player, along with some sets of .45 records, Snow White and Cinderella being my favorites. I liked Snow White because of the handsome prince that awoke her from the witches curse. Cinderella I related to because I was alone up in the top part of the house, and I could easily feel how Cinderella used to sit and dream about her Prince Charming coming to rescue her.

cinderella

disksI was given other books as well, including some Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, and other Mother Goose things, Little Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbred Man. When I was to turn the page, there would be some sign, like little Gus the mouse saying “Gus Gus Gus Gus Gus,” for Cinderella.

I was told by my father to only touch the little red button, only put 3 or 4 records on the turnstile, and only then to adjust the volume button on the side. I think my Little Red Riding Hood records were bright red, others were turquoise, but most of them were standard black .45s.

It didn’t matter how many times I played these albums and listened to the narration, I would cry at all the right places, and get angry with others, or jump for joy. I think I became addicted to romance and the Happily Ever After way back then when I was 3. The beauty of the spoken word or a story I loved came to me and filled me with wonder, hope and the clear sense of a beautiful, loving destiny. I just knew the Happily Ever After was going to be my story some day.

These are cherished moments. My storyteller and favorite pirate prince, J.D. Hart, send me this YouTube video of the exact copy of my record player. Listen and enjoy. And then listen to his narration, my grownup version of that little attic room, where I get to don my headsets, listen, cry at the sad parts and jump for joy at all the happy ones, just like those days many years ago.

Except now I get to share them with you.

TOUR-EXCERPT
He wanted to say something but suddenly became hesitant. Everything had gone so fast, he didn’t want to spook her. He was unafraid to show her how much he loved being with her, especially since she’d promised to visit him in Coronado and they’d see where things went from there. It would have been like the cart before the horse, but he wanted to ask her to marry him at that impulsive moment, but he held himself back. Being the wife of a SEAL was a special assignment and there was no training for that, except the school of hard knocks. There was a community of wives that looked out for each other. And not all the stories from overseas made it home to them. The smart wives knew this. He knew it was a lot to ask of someone. He didn’t want to fall for a lady who didn’t really understand what she’d be getting herself into. But that was a completely crazy thought, because he’d already fallen for her. He decided he’d just put it out of his mind, and not discuss anything future-related, to keep the pressure off them both. Nothing wrong with having a little bit of—well, a lot of—fun in the next few days before his deployment. He held her under the starlight. Feeling eyes on him, he saw Julie’s parents eyeing him from their kitchen window, smiling. He couldn’t keep up the eye contact because odds weren’t in his favor. He wasn’t prince charming, or Sir Galahad riding in on his white horse. He was just a guy other guys sent in to blow stuff up, grab people and hopefully get out before getting shot or caught. And his intentions, although he liked to think of them as honorable, were merely to do everything in his power to be as irresistible as possible to her so that when he left, he’d be the one hard to miss. And then maybe she’d wait for him. Maybe she’d wait until he got fully well. It was a lot of ifs. The music stopped while he was kissing her ear through her hair, while he was holding her tighter as she melted into him. He liked that they were dancing because their thighs made soft caresses and the dress, that yummy dress, made all that noise. He just knew every time he heard the sound of layers of chiffon, he’d get hard. It was going to be something he’d have for the rest of his life.

Marc started to stand, but she stopped him with her hand on his forearm. He did sit back down, but he crossed his massive arms in front of his chest, leaning back into the couch and looking the opposite direction, away from her.

“I know none of this makes sense. Not sure I do either. I thought that—well I just thought a little night of anonymous sex with no strings would be something—and this is a totally selfish thing here, I admit it—I thought I could just have…” This was going to be much more difficult than she’d planned. Everything she wanted to say wasn't right. “I just wanted one more night being single, being free to choose, being with someone without it being complicated. And I’m sorry. I realize now that that was a huge mistake.”

His passive, hulking frame and dispassionate stare into the distance broke her heart.

“Please Marc, look at me.” He did, but his eyebrows were raised, his eyes contained the look of someone who thought she was full of crap. She mustered her courage and added, looking into his sky blue eyes, those eyes she’d gotten lost in, eyes she would remember forever, “I am truly sorry. I am not a good person at all. I did this without any regard for your feelings.”

Their eyes did connect, and for a second she could see the hurt there, a little dream in his heart that was dying too, just as hers was. Instinct told her to reach over and kiss him, hug him, tell him how sorry she was for her behavior, but she knew that was the wrong way to handle it. As much as she wanted to touch him and let him know how awful she felt, she needed to keep her distance.

Just tell him the truth and get out.

Marc hadn't dropped his eyes. He was searching for something in her face she hoped didn't show up. He was looking for evidence she cared for him. Wouldn't it be wiser to show coldness? Let him understand there was no future between them?

But was that the truth? Really the truth? Did all this happen because of her niggling doubts about Ricardo and the life she would have with him in Brazil? If she were certain of her decision to marry him, would the night with Marc have happened? She honestly didn't know the answer to that.

“It was the most beautiful afternoon I've spent in my entire life. I will never forget it. Never, Marc,” she said.

His crooked smile with the dimple on the right side of his full lips was sexy as hell, and changed the mask of his face.

“It was a pretty incredible afternoon, but hey, no worries, Sophia. I’m not looking to get hooked up with anyone. I’m getting ready to deploy. This is just a little R and R before we go. It kind of worked, in a sick sense of the word.” He looked at his palms.

She hadn't expected that.

“You aren't angry?”

“For an afternoon of the best sex of my life? Fuck no.”

It was a nice thing to say, but she felt the blunt force of a verbal slap. “I think it was more than that, is what I’m trying to say,” she said, her voice low and husky.

Marc shot up, put his hands in his cargo shorts. “I’m glad. While you’re working your way through the cruise ship males, I’ll be having beers with my buds and probably swearing off Italian girls for awhile.” He began to walk out of the bar.

She had to do something. She ran and stood in front of him, to stop him.

“Wait a minute. What I want to say is that it wasn't just a hookup. I mean it started that way, but it became more, I guess is what I’m saying.”

“Well, that’s fine, honey. And if you get that itch again, I’ll scratch it. No worries. I’m not going to get pissed off and ruin another good time.” His brilliant white teeth and blue eyes melted her bones.

“So it wasn't—“

“You don’t have the right to that privileged information, honey. You’re engaged to someone else. I don’t gotta tell you anything about me or how I feel about anything, remember? But if you want another anonymous hookup, I’m not going anywhere. We've got like twenty days together. We've already proven we can let our bodies do the talking since the words seem to get in the way.”

He left the bar. She felt her stomach drop to her ankles.

It wasn't easy to put it out of her mind, the look on his face as he turned, bowed slightly and walked out of her life. She’d already cried for him once as she was walking away from him in the Piazza. She’d left a part of her with him that day, and now today he took away another piece as he walked down the marble foyer, pushed the up button and left in the elevator.

Author Inverview: Jerrie Alexander

Today I'm pleased to welcome Jerrie Alexander. She's a new romantic suspense author to me. Hope you enjoy another great RS writer. Welcome, Jerrie.

Sharon, thank you for
hosting me today. I look forward to visiting and will be around all day.

What genres do you write
and why? Anything interesting about how you got started?

My first love has always
been romantic suspense. I tried my hand at a couple of contemporary romances.
Both will forever stay hidden. So for now, I'm sticking with what I do best,
which is killing people. Hypothetically, of course)
I can't remember a time
when I wasn't interested in writing. Majored in journalism but my desire to
embellish quickly turned me to fiction. Life, love, family, and career
intervened, and I wouldn't change that for the world. In fact, I think it
helped me when I buckled down and concentrated on writing.
Do you like writing in series,
or single?

I have two singles out and
a short story on the way. I enjoyed writing them as singles. But I've had a
number of requests from readers who want the secondary characters to have their
own happy ending. I've written book one and two of the Lost and Found, Inc,
series. Book one, Hell or High Water, is in the edit stage. I have to admit, I
love writing the series.
Did you get “the call” or
did you get the call to “go Indie?”

I sold to a small press
first. The Green-Eyed Doll, The Last Execution, and Someone To Watch Over Me
are published by The Wild Rose Press. But it will be Indie for me going forward.
I like the idea of being in control of my schedule, covers, editing, and
publishing!
Who is your favorite
character you've created? Why?

Boy, that's a tough one. May
I use the no name dog from The Green-Eyed Doll? I don't plot so it didn't
surprise me when a stray mutt wandered up and befriended my hero. He'd eat the
sheriff's food but wouldn't allow him to touch him. That dog wound up playing a
significant role in the book.
Do you find it easier to
write the bad boys or the good boys? I'm assuming both are heroic, but which
ones are more fun to write?

Bad boys for sure! I love
writing a hero who has a troubled past and inner demons to overcome. They're
hotter, more dangerous, and a lot more fun for the heroine to tame. Or at least
she'll try to tame him.
What about the heroines?
Do you find it easiest to write the bad girls or the good girls?

I haven't written a bad
girl. Not yet. 🙂 My heroines have been through hell in one form or another and
are stronger because of their experiences. They wind up in trouble, but don't
always rely on someone else to come save them.
If you could have a date
with one of your characters, which one would it be and why? Where would you go?

Not fair! I love each one
more than the last while I'm writing them. I'd take any of them and head to the
beach. Warm water, white sand, and a sexy hunk…I'd be happy.
If you could go to a
desert island with two companions, who would you bring? What would you do
there? What would you bring if you could bring anything?

You said go to a
desert island as in voluntary, not that I'd be stranded, right? So immediately,
Gerard Butler popped into my mind!
Okay, I'd take two well
trained SEALS. Which by the way, I was fortunate to work with a young man who
was a SEAL. He's my go to guy on anything that shoots or blows up!
I'd bring a working
satellite phone, replacement battery, snorkeling equipment, and enjoy myself.
Pretend you have just sold
your 100,000th copy of one of your books. What will you do to celebrate?

I'd buy my husband a new
bass boat. Can you believe those things can cost 40K? It's like buying a SUV.
He'd be over the moon excited to replace his boat with a new one.
Tell us something about
you that most people wouldn't know or guess about you?

That once upon a time I
sang lead in a band. We played Lions Club dances, proms, etc. It was great fun
and will always be a good memory.
Who are your favorite
authors/books?

Linda Howard's Death
Angel!! That book will forever and always be in my collection. And Cherry
Adair, anything she writes is great. My guilty pleasure is historical fiction
by Elizabeth Hoyt.
What are you working on
now?

I am 23K words into a new
romantic suspense. Working title The Last Tear Drop. I read an FBI profile
about erotomania and it peaked my interest. This is way past having a stalker.
To prove himself worthy, the villain kills anyone he thinks causes the object
of his affection trouble. But when he discovers she's never going to love him,
he feels betrayed and all hell breaks loose!
Excerpt: The Last Execution
Ethan turned his head sideways as he studied J.T.’s
face. Wide eyed, the boy pointed at the scar with his index finger. J.T. wasn’t
surprised. The kid was probably curious.
            “How’d
you get that?”
            “A
piece of shrapnel—” He paused and considered Ethan’s age. “I was in the war. A
bomb went off and a piece of metal smacked me in the face.”
            “Does
it hurt?”
            “Not
anymore.” J.T. marveled at the innocence in Ethan’s eyes.
            “Can
I touch it?”
            “I
guess so.” J.T. breathed in and waited. Ethan hesitated, leaning closer.
            “I’m
not supposed to talk about your scar.”
            “Who
said?”
            “Mama.”
            “It’s okay. I won’t tell.”
            J.T.
turned his head to the side. No one had outright asked to touch the constant
reminder of a day when his best friend caught the worst of an IUD. Hell, people
shied away from his right side. Except Leigh, she looked him square in the
face. He lay still while Ethan poked a finger into the scar a couple of times.
After a few seconds of investigation, the kid cupped the scar with his small
hand and patted lightly. The oddest thing happened to J.T.’s heart. It swelled
inside his chest and then clenched.
            “Mama
said you were a brave soldier.”
            Alien
emotions swirled through J.T. and an unexplained urge to hug Ethan put a weird
lump in J.T.’s throat. Unable to cope or understand, his mind raced for an
idea, anything to end the moment.
The Last Execution blurb:
To survive, she must put
the past behind her. To love, she must learn to trust.
Homicide detective Leigh
McBride's first assignment with the FBI brings her face-to-face with a past
she's tried hard to forget. And when her temporary partner, a cynical
ex-marine, lights a fire in her she thought long-extinguished, her darkest
secret is threatened.
Scarred both physically
and emotionally, Special Agent J. T. Noble is a man of few words. He prefers to
keep people at a distance—until he meets Leigh. He's attracted to her strength
and drawn in by her secrecy. But in their line of work, secrets can be deadly.
When the killer they are
hunting aims his vigilante justice at Leigh's past assailant, the fine line
between right and wrong blurs. To heal the past—and find their future together—Leigh
and J. T. must learn that only through trust and forgiveness can love grow.
Jerrie Alexander bio:
A student of  creative writing in her youth, Jerrie set aside her passion when life presented her with a John Wayne husband, and two wonderful children.  A career in logistics offered her the opportunity to travel to many beautiful locations in America, and she revisits them in her romantic suspense novels.
But the characters went with her, talked to her, and insisted she share their dark, sexy stories with others.  She writes alpha males and kick-ass women who weave their way through death and fear to emerge stronger because of, and on occasion in spite of, their love for each other.  She likes to torture people, make them suffer, and if they’re strong enough, they live happily ever after.
The author of THE GREEN-EYED DOLL, THE LAST EXECUTION, and soon to be released, SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, Jerrie and her husband live in Texas. She loves sunshine, children’s laughter, sugar (human and granulated), and researching for her heroes and heroines.

Welcome Kaylea Cross

Today I am thrilled to welcome Kaylea Cross. She is a new author I have just discovered, and I love her writing. She also writes about military heroes, but from a detailed perspective I find rare in romantic suspense. You can tell she has studied many disciplines. Hope you will enjoy my new find as much as I have!
Tell me how you got started writing military romance? How many books have you written?
I’ve been a military history nut ever since I can remember, so I guess it’s little wonder that I chose to write about military characters when I decided I wanted to write romance. To date I’ve written 16 books under two different names (because they write different genres).
Why do you think these Alpha military heroes (and heroines) are so popular? What makes them heroes?
I think—I hope—they’re popular because people admire our men and women in uniform. They sacrifice so much, and so do their families.
They’re heroic because they serve and defend their country at risk to their own lives, and they do it with little or no recognition. Or much compensation, in my opinion.
How do you compliment the heroine to a strong alpha military guy? Do you write them strong? Compliant? Kick-butt?
I personally like heroines that are smart and have a backbone. Though if they’re civilians who suddenly find themselves in harm’s way, they’d better listen to the hero and do what he says without argument. I can’t stand it when a clueless heroine starts arguing with a seasoned soldier/operator in a dangerous situation about how things should be done. Hello? He’s the expert—just do as you’re told!
Do you like writing in series, or single?
Series! I like it best when we get to meet a whole cast of characters and get to know them, so we really care about each of them throughout the entire story arc of the series. When it comes time for each character’s story, the reader will hopefully be that much more invested in the book.
Who is your favorite character you've created? Why?
Hands down it has to be Luke Hutchinson, my former SEAL turned CIA contractor who features in my first romantic suspense series (the hero of Absolution). He’s fifty years old and has gone through hell for his country, including sacrificing his family life in order to hunt down the monster he created early in his career. If anyone deserves a shot at happily ever after, it’s Luke. And he’s CRAZY sexy. For real. Gah! I love him so much.  I have to admit I haven’t started Absolution, but after reading Cover of Darkness, I had to go out and order it. I mean, Yum.
Do you find it easier to write the bad boys or the good boys? I'm assuming both are heroic, but which ones are more fun to write?
I’m going to say good boys, since most of my heroes have very strict moral compasses and high standards of conduct they hold themselves to. Their training and experience in the field mature them in a quick hurry as well. I have written a couple of heroes that have a bit of a bad boy persona, but they know when to stop and put on their game faces.
What about the heroines? Do you find it easiest to write the bad girls or the good girls?

Definitely good girls. They might have an attitude or be able to kick ass at any given moment, but they’re always good people. Not perfect, mind you. Nobody wants to read about a perfect character, since that’s boring, not to mention unrealistic. Each of my characters has to grow and change during their book, struggling to overcome some sort of fear or flaw. I think that makes them easier for readers to identify with.
I did just finish a book with a sort of bad girl heroine (Maya, from the Bagram Special Ops series), but she changes a lot during her story because she lets her defenses down once the hero earns her trust. Not an easy feat, I’ll tell you that much. But so satisfying in the end.
If you could have a date with one of your characters, which one would it be and why? Where would you go?
You mean if we were both single and unspoken for? *g* Oh, that’s so hard! I immediately want to say Luke, but we wouldn’t be compatible for a lot of different reasons. So, I’d have to go with either his son, Rayne (from Out of Her League), a former Marine now SWAT officer, or Cam, the Air Force Pararescueman from Deadly Descent (first Bagram Special Ops book).
They’re both sweet but highly trained and very protective of the women they care about. Alpha males for sure, but not so much that they require special feeding and handling, like some of my other heroes do.
If you could go to a desert island with two companions, who would you bring? What would you do there? What would you bring if you could bring anything?
I love my husband, but he’s an accountant, so I doubt he’d be much good to me on a desert island. (Don’t tell him I said that!) I’d want someone with survival training, and they’d have to be both calm and decisive. Can I take a SEAL and a Pararescueman with me?
Aside from food and water, a GPS and a way to find a rescue? I’d want practical stuff like tools, shelter, etc. And a never ending supply of pen and paper to write with.
Pretend you have just sold your 100,000th copy of one of your books. What will you do to celebrate?
Ah, an author can dream… I’d probably plan a surprise trip to Disneyland for my hubby and kids.
Tell us something about you that most people wouldn't know or guess about you?
I’m a total wimp! Reading my books you might not think so, but I hate conflict of any sort. Gives me hives.
I like being at home with my kids or writing, puttering in the garden, quilting, painting or reading. Though I do own a collection of Civil War weapons… (And up here in Canada, owning any sort of gun is considered very weird if you’re not a hunter. So I’m considered to be a very strange duck.)
Who are your favorite authors/books?
Linda Howard’s All the Queen’s Men is my favorite romantic suspense book of all time. If you haven’t read it, do. I was inspired to write Cover of Darkness because of it.
I also loved the early Black Dagger Brotherhood books by JR Ward (up ‘til Vishous’s book). Those characters seem so real, I got sucked right into their world.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the first book of a new single title series I hope an agent will be interested in, featuring a group of ex-Spec Ops heroes now working as military contractors. Fingers crossed!
Excerpt: From Deadly Descent, book 1 of the Bagram Special Ops series
She kept firing, heartened that some SEALs remained out front. It wasn’t like they’d deserted her.
Her gun clicked when she squeezed the trigger. Empty.
Shit, out of ammo again. She reloaded. Her gaze swept past the SEALs toward the Chinook. She cried out in relief when she saw Cam running flat out toward her. He moved like a blur, weapon firing.
He came barreling into the rock shelter and skidded to his knees beside her. “Come on,” he yelled over the noise.
Still holding her weapon, she grabbed a fistful of his uniform as he levered her onto his shoulders. Amidst the whine and ping of the rounds landing around them, he ran for the Chinook. She kept firing in bursts toward the enemy, and stopped only when she felt the heavy rotor wash beating at her back. A howl of agony ripped from her throat as Cam flipped her off his shoulder and all but tossed her into the cabin.
Someone grabbed her under the armpits and hauled her backward away from the ramp as Cam jumped inside. Black spots swam before her eyes.
“Talk to me, Spike.”
She turned her head at Ryan’s voice. “I’m okay!”
He moved away toward the cockpit. The inside of the bird was so crowded with bodies she couldn’t tell who was who. The pitch of the big engines changed, rising to a shrill scream as the bird struggled to take off. Fighting back the pain, she found Cam at last near the ramp and met his stare. The gunners were still firing from their positions. The bird shuddered and strained under the burden of all its passengers.
Oh God. They were overweight. The engines were already maxed out.
Cam exchanged a long look with Jackson, then pushed his way over to her. She grabbed his upper arms and leaned forward to shout. “They need to throw some ammo and equipment out, or—”
“Listen to me.” His eyes were the most intense she’d ever seen them. She stilled.
He surrounded her with his arms for a second before kissing her hard and pulling back. He shook her once, staring down intently at her. “I love you.”
Her heart stopped beating.
He wouldn’t. She read the intent in his eyes. “No, don’t—”
“Hang on to this for me,” he shouted. He yanked out the chain she’d given him and put it in her stiff hand. Then he turned and disappeared down the tail ramp.
She threw out a hand to grab him. Stop him. But her fingers only grabbed air. “Cam!” He didn’t stop. Didn’t so much as hesitate as he jumped off the tail ramp and joined the SEALs still on the ground around the Chinook.
“Cam, no!” Heedless of the pain in her leg, she pulled herself toward the closing ramp. Desperate to get to him before it was too late.
She tripped on someone’s leg and went down, crying out in agony as her wounded knee smashed into the steel floor. Hard hands gripped her waist. Yanked her up and back. She fought them.
“Dev, don’t.”
Ryan. Mindless, she ripped at his restraining hands. “Let me go! He’s going to get killed!”
Ryan hauled her up and into his arms, holding her tight as the Chinook lifted off the ground. She fought him with all her strength. “Is he on the Hawk?”
“Dev—”
“Is he on one of the Hawks!”
“I…I don’t know.” He held her tighter. Cutting off her breath. She weakened and stopped fighting.
Her body was stiff with denial. She was sobbing now, hysterical. “W-we have to g-get him.”
“He’ll get out, Dev. I promise you.”
The pain was suffocating. She couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t ease the splitting sensation in her chest. The tears flowed fast and hot down her cheeks. They soaked the front of Ryan’s fatigues as the bird rose into the dark sky and left the man she loved behind.
